MV Won’t Start After Windows Update

  1. I just ran a Windows update on my PC, and now MV 1.6.1 won’t open at all. When I try to open a project via my desktop, file explorer, or even Steam, it just comes up with a white screen which closes itself after a few seconds.

    Some background:

I’d previously been experiencing extremely frequent crashes in MV’s Animations tab. Any action taken within the tab could set off a crash, and attempting to change the hue of any animation would instantly crash the program.

I tried to reinstall a fresh version of MV 1.6.1 prior to attempting the Windows update, uninstalling my previous 1.6.1 install first. No effect on the animation tab crashes. I also uninstalled and reinstalled MV after the Windows update. It continues to crash, but now before the program can even load.

After the crashes began, I uninstalled all antivirus and malware protection from my computer to make sure they weren’t interfering. Still crashing.

I haven’t tried downgrading versions yet because my project is using a number of plugins designed for 1.6.1. I’ll do it if there’s absolutely no other choice, but I’ll just be trading one type of crash out for others.

Not sure if this is even remotely relevant, but the Windows update automatically bumped my screen resolution up to 1920 x 1080 from whatever it was previously, and it’s now locked in at that setting for some reason. I haven’t fooled around with my default screen resolution much and honestly don’t know much about how it works or what it affects.

Can anyone give me some insight into what might be going wrong and how to fix it?
  2. What version of Windows are you on? Windows 8? 10?
  3. if the program comes up with a whitescreen before crashing, it might be that your display drivers are no longer supporting OpenGL. That has been known to happen if a driver was switched from the graphic card manufacturers' driver to a Microsoft driver, because the Microsoft drivers often only support DirectX instead of both DirectX and OpenGL.
Search the latest display driver from your graphic chip manufactorer on his website (do NOT use windows autosearch) and try to install that driver.
  4. I have the same problem save for the white screen. I get the normal mv startup screen before it crashes or refuses to load. Currently moving my files and will be reinstalling windows to see if that helps. If you can, try that and see if it helps, otherwise you may have to wait for windows to release an update that fixes what they broke in this update.
  5. Check your drivers. The last windows update deleted my drivers. Not just uninstalled them, deleted them and all trace of them. If that is the case you'll have to manually reinstall them or do a rollback to an older version of windows.
  6. Thank you to everyone who answered here - the Windows update did in fact delete my graphics drivers. I’ve reinstalled everything and MV is functional again! Restoring the drivers seems to have helped with the frequent animation tab crashes, too (knock on wood).

I really appreciate the quick response - due to my living situation, my desktop internet access is quite limited, and I had a very narrow timeframe to be able to re-download what I needed. I could have been locked out of development for upwards of a month if you all hadn’t pointed me in the right direction today. Thanks again!
  7. Good to hear you got a timely fix.
