  1. I was just wondering, now that rmvxace is mp3 and .oog only (And rmvx was midi)

What are the differences? So far I can only tell a slight difference in sound, I.E. you dont hear as many of the instruments in mp3 form from midi.

Havent even played an oog track yet though.
  2. OGG is quite small but still has very good quality, so it's a good choice for your game if you care how big the files will get when it's finished ^^
  3. Well, there is an advantage to mp3/ogg over midi and vice versa.

    Advantages of ogg/mp3

mp3 and ogg will have superior quality about 95% of the time (near lossless format)

Sounds (virtually) the same regardless of sound card, but the speakers do change the sound a lot.

Can produce on all frequencies. This can be good if you want to start from infrasound and build up.

    Disadvantages of ogg/mp3

Can be difficult to modify notes individually from a sample

Tempo can be hard to control

    Advantages of Midi

Midi is great for using in music programs like Reason where you can place the midi in to tweak all the individual instruments on average

It has a simpler file format thus producing a smaller file

    Disadvantages of midi

It can sound differently on different sound cards :(

Depending on the software, you cannot usually use spiffy sound effects w/o partial format conversion into something native.

Most people don't use midi anymore. A lot of the instruments have usb connections and midi is slower on a computer. I had an old casio that used midi, but I had to get a converter to usb since I didn't have a port for it. There was about a 500ms latency issue so it was slow by about half a second. It took a while but I made it work.

In short, I support Enterbrain's decision.
  4. Ace can use midis, but there is a glitch that prevents them from being imported. If you don't believe me I'm using some in my project right now.
  5. Is it possible to take any sound file in mp3/ogg format, and produce the same sounds in midi format?

Would you care to share your seceret? lol. Because I have over 1000 music files i went through form my rmvx game, and majority of them sound horrible now in mp3 format.
  7. You can still use Midis but you have to put them into the BGM folder yourself, the import function doesn't work for them.

It's really difficult to reproduce the sound you hear in mp3/OGG with as a midi file. mp3 and OGG is really more of a compressed recording, where as midi is protocol that tells your computer what and how to play various instruments which can sound different based on the software and hardware used.
  8. Unless you use the thing I just talked about. ;)
  9. It depends on the game you're going for as well. If you are making a sort of retro tribute, midi may be the way to go, especially if you are using a more simplistic retro-style tileset. Personally, as long as it fits the scene, I don't care enough to sit through a game and try and identify every single note. The only thing I do care about is size, and I've set my bar at around 200 MB. Very few games get that high, and those that go over this I have to wonder why.

Does it actually create midi's or is it just an mp3/ogg with a midi file extension?
  11. It uses the sound card to record it (nothing is actually played so there is no background noise or loss of quality), creating an mp3 or ogg file.
  12. Oh, I thought you meant mp3 to midi, not the other way around.
  13. Oops I wrote it backwards. :p
