Multiple Projects at the same time

  1. So I'm currently working on a small fangame which would be my first completed game on RMVXA. After that I plan on doing a second project that's completely original. However I feel the urge to work on both projects at the same time. This can be done. The devs of Megaman 2 developed that game while simultaneously working on other projects. But that was a team of people working on an NES game. It's not like Toby Fox could have worked on Undertale and another project at the same time. It would have been crazy.

Have any of you done that? Was it a good idea?
  2. Working on two projects might help with things like artistic blocks IF you have the persistence to keep on your projects.
Jumping between dozens of projects usually means neither will ever get completed.

And working on two projects also splits the time between them - do you have that time?

most of the time i do have the time for that
  4. I'm working on and off in an Ace game, Factorio modding and Team Fortress 2 mapping.
    sometimes I wake up tech-y, sometimes I wake up build-y, or paint-y.
I *know* what needs to be done in each case..... I work up the will to work on it by working on something else.
it's like stretching before jogging, you may want to get that horizon right now but if you don't stretch first, you'd be sore after the fact.
  5. For me personally, I can't work on multiple projects. I always end up favoring one project and ignoring the other. You can certainly give it a try, but I think your energy and motivation would be better spent on one project at a time.

that's a good way to view it. I myself have other projects like those
  7. You can try it yourself though, but personally I can't work on multiple project at same time. I only focus on one, then another project usually comes from my boredom of developing the main project and want to try something for the lul. But there is single MAIN project and SIDE projects (not counting collaboration). I can't have two mains.
  8. Everything I had to say on this I already said in the identically titled thread on the first page of this forum, but in short: no, it was never a good idea for me. Never worked once. I restrain myself to writing down notes for future projects, and if I get burnt out on my current project, I dig up those notes and do a quick prototype to switch gears a bit, cleanse my palate, and then go back to my main game with fresh eyes and fresh motivation. I'm a hobbyist dev on a full-time animation course at university so I don't have the time to split my focus between projects like that, since it's already split between my game projects and uni work.
  9. I know your pain, if you want to do more than one game in your lifetime, keep them short. I tried chipping on both projects for awhile, but ended up slowing myself down immensely, and I didn't really get anywhere until I started committing to one project at a time.
