Modding characters sprites

Hey! I'm new here. The problem i have is this: i need to draw an "aura" on characters but when i do that in battle the character has a white square behind him. I used paint (i'm not good with graphics) How can i solve this?

You need to use a program that supports transparency such as Gimp, Photoshop or Paint.net. Paint cannot export with a transparent background.

By not using Microsoft Paint.

MS Paint automatically destroys all transparency in all pictures saved with it, because it does not support transparency.

Use a different program like GIMP, paint.net, Photoshop - anything that supports both layers and transparency and you're good.

MS Paint is an excuse for doodling and can be used for screenshot, but it is not a real image program
