  1. Hey there,

I've been reading up on "trippy" and weird video games, as well as urban legends (polybius, pokemon ghost etc).

List any weird, offbeat, unsettling, trippy, mindf*ck games that you know of. Doesn't have to be retro-style.

    My List:

    http://en.wikipedia....wiki/Yume_Nikki

    http://aooni.wikia.c...iki/Ao_Oni_Wiki

    http://en.wikipedia....LSD_(video_game)

Also, list your favorite "unsettling" or creepy urban legends(real or fake)/easter eggs and theories regarding games. Edit: Might as well toss weird creepy glitches into the mix too.
  2. Oh, I got this.

    SCP-087.

    Free download, as well.

  3. Slender... my god. Plus that game crashed on me three times. And there is no way to fix it. It is if I was cursed. ;_;

Holy Jeeze! Just watching it on Youtube gave me butterflies. And I'm in a lit office with 10 other people. Haha. I'll have to give it a try.

    Edit:

Oh yeah. I've heard of that. Slenderman....
  5. I guess Isle of the Dead qualifies. ^^

Imagine my reaction when opening this up and being told it was a game similar to Space Invaders.

Really? It comes from the "heavybreathing.wav, high rendering fog" school of horror. It's poorly-made nearly to the point of self-parody. It plays a ridiculously melodramatic violin chord whenever the only enemy in the game comes into view, which is less restraint than even Dead Space had. I can't imagine that anyone finds that game unsettling for any reason but that they feel they're obligated to, due to the long-standing Slenderman meme.

If you're really so credulous and easily-frightened that this does scare you and you're not exaggerating to jump on the bandwagon with everyone else, well... My condolences.

For content, .flow is a Yume Nikki fangame that quickly spun off into its own thing, and I quite like it. It's more coherent than Yume 2kki and has more things to do and interact with than its predecessor. It's also much more focused about wanting to frighten the player. I don't think there's a good English translation yet, which is a shame -- Japanese RM2k/3 games don't play nice with English systems, and there's a certain postgame element that's difficult to get without at least a guide.

It's pretty good. The ambiance caused by the sound is extremely dissuading. I'm one for which sound affects me much more than visuals do... So, I definitely recommend you play it in a darkened room, wearing headphones and with the sound at a comfortable level.

I cannot imagine how this would ever be compared to Space Invaders. It's beautiful in its simplicity, and in my opinion, is extremely unnerving.

  9. There have only ever been 2 games that I recall that really freaked me out.

1: I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream The name alone was enough to give me the creeps!

2: Silent Hill 2 This was the first of the series that I played and really presented some truly original, freaky style enemies to go up against.
  10. The best part of I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream is that Harlan Ellison himself does the voice acting for AM. He pulls it off more or less perfectly.

    You misread what I said.

Phantasmagoria and its sequel A Puzzle of Flesh are the most unsettling - and when I was younger also pretty scary - games I've played. It's no longer scary by today's standards and the acting was pretty bad even then, but some of the content in the games is still somewhat disturbing to say the least.

I just learned that! I'll have to find this game, if not for this reason alone!
  13. Yume Nikki was probably the first Video Game I've played where the sheer horror of the unknown drove me to actually avoid certain locations. I thought I could handle it like it was no big deal, but it was just unfairly freaky.
  14. Hello Kitty Online...I've never been the same since..nyan 3:

I'm sure that joke is older than the game itself.

  16. Check out SCP-087-B, it's even scarier than the original SCP-087...
  17. SCP to me is not all that scary. it's just loud ass noises and creepy looking monsters. a helpless version of Dead Space. I've watched it and played it. To me Slender is still scary..(I have not jumped on the bandwagon I knew about the damn thing before the game came out.) but Amnesia mods. Frick those. They are worse than the main game.
  18. I think everyone's forgetting about Ib and .flow. Both of them are Yume Nikki-esque games and they're alot scarier than the original.
