  1. Künstlerroman: Conquest of Culture

    STORYLINE/PLOT

You are Lloyd Artiliarias Devlin, Commander of the Winged-Sun. After returning from a successful campaign against the neighbouring capital of Lagao you find yourself swept away in the night by creatures you have never encountered before. On waking, you realise your darling wife Eva has been taken by the same creatures you now face; the burning vengeance of your love would not be extinguished by an ocean of blood. Finding allies, you seek to exact retribution on anything that would even consider harm to your sweet buttercup, your beloved honeydrop dew-blossom.

Escaping these loathsome wretches, you find yourself in a world of myth. One that your family has a long and bloody history with. A land of demons, elves and fairies, a world of magic, eternal life and peace. In this world, demons and humans cohabitate in a harmonious society where death is only an inconvenience, where true death only occurs when one loses the will to live. But you are Lloyd Artiliarias Devlin, unstoppable conqueror! You will never lay down your arms and succumb to death nor will you ever acquiesce to peace.

To find and save your love muffin, you must rely on your wit and guile at diplomacy. Ha, not you, Lloyd Artiliarias Devlin. You know only the poetry of war and the song of battle. If these Demons want peace, they will have to fight for it - the irony amuses you. You will stop at nothing to take back your beloved from their wicked clutches. Lead your noble party Lloyd, honoured commander, lead them against anything that stands in your way. Know that here in this world without death, you can rally over and over again sweeping away foes with your indomitable spirit and natural affinity for battle.

It is time for the House of Devlin to once again make its mark upon the world of Dystalia, a mark that will turn the tide of culture. You are the emissary of change, you are the one who can rebuild this society from the hellscape of demonic subjugation and render it anew in the blissful and divine rulership of the Winged-sun.

It is your time Lloyd, it is your destiny!

    CHARACTERS

You can find more information on the game, maps, characters and lore for the start of the game on my weebly site in the 'Games and Design' tab.(https://macademia.weebly.com). I don't want to give too much away but here's the bio for the main character.

    Lloyd Artiliarias Devlin Bio:

Lloyd is a hero, always has been. Some say he was gifted by the gods with an unnatural ability to coerce and command. As true an artist with the sword as with the quill. He defeated Orlaf the mighty, laid siege to the cliff fort of Hundang and burned his opposition to the ground. He is both merciless and loved. Lloyd is whatever he chooses to be.
A descendant of a bloodline of warriors, Lloyd was schooled so extensively, his eyesight suffered as a result. Now, at the age of thirty-three, Lloyd governs the largest empire on the continent. A prodigious conqueror, Lloyd leads his people as an army. All residents, no matter their circumstance, are trained to be warriors. His famous battalion, the Winged-Sun, spends as much time teaching the populace as they do killing their enemies. This freedom of education and conscription, done with a personal touch, inspires loyalty and community among his subjects.
    In Lloyd's words;
"A nation built on community is free from poverty. A nation free of poverty is free from despair. And a nation free of all that can deny it its greatness! That my soldiers, warriors grand and mighty! That sense of hope, that knowledge, that by your own arms you can write your destiny! That nation, free of despair and free of fear!
THAT NATION, FREE OF POVERTY AND ANGUISH!
THAT NATION, RULED AND LOVED BY ITS LEADER!!
That nation, my comrades, is not just a dream.
    NOT JUST AN IMPOSSIBLE DESTINY!
NOT JUST THE FLIGHT OF WHIM AND FANTASY!!
    BUT SOMETHING,
    something,
that all of us can sculpt together. Our precious legion, the light that soars ever higher. The Winged-Sun.
    NOW TAKE UP YOUR ARMS!!!
    TO WAR!!"

    SYNOPSIS

    Spoiler
Your standard RPG really, I've changed how magic operates slightly. It doesn't level up but you increase mana by using books and learning spells. Contains lots of literature and a few 'random' mechanics for checking around maps. I didn't want to punish the player for checking places but I also didn't want it being exploited so it works on a timer. It has a few mini-games in the market area and diversifies playthroughs with meaningful choices for the player to make.

My main issue is that this game has grown so large I can’t feasibly test it myself any longer. It has a lot of hypertext and features going on and since I had to take a break to finish my coursework I don’t know where I need to be spending my time on fixing things. The last playthrough I did took me about ten hours (and there was a lot left unfinished). I’ve added in a utility section to the menu that allows access to the debug and some ‘cheats’ to help you if you get stuck or just want to try out some features that are still in development. I’d recommend saving once per map just to be safe, but there shouldn’t be too many issues until you start leaving the first continent which is where I am currently developing content.

It’s a 1.31 version because doodads are used in it and they don’t function correctly in later version of rpgmaker for me.Some of the graphics might be a little off because I was moving over from 800x600 to 1104x624 so if you see any let me know as I'm hunting them out slowly. I'm more of a writer than an artist so just accept I've done the best I can with the graphics, I tried to make it not so generic but that doesn't make me any better at art.

    Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

  2. Cool!
  3. Thanks, if you've had a chance to play the demo and have any advice or found any bugs let me know!
  4. Unfortunately I'm away from home atm and my laptop won't download the file for some reason, I'll try again as soon as I get home in a few days.
  5. I added a google drive link to the post if that helps. I don't know if it's a permissions issue or something on dropbox.
  6. I’ll try again ASAP
  7. I tried it out, and I was a big fan on the map design and the combat. A couple things I thought could be fixed was the frequency of battles. Sometimes I’d be fighting an enemy every 5 steps. Also, the song that plays when you’re talking to your wife is a default Kickstarter/commercial kind of music, and for me it really didn’t fit the game and was kind of a turn off at first. The download file could also be made a lot smaller. Besides that, I really liked the aesthetic and the characters!
  8. Hey, thanks for trying it out. I'll take on board the changes you suggest.

    1. I know the file size is still a bit large but I'm still not sure which images will eventually be used so I haven't trimmed out the down the resources. That was probably a bit lazy of me, I'll make sure to cut out the unecessary artwork and sound files.

    2. Sorry the music is a bit generic, I'll have a look around for better free audio to improve the atmosphere. Being a poor talentless hack, i'm kind of reliant on royalty free music but I'm sure there's other things available.

    3. About the battles being a bit frequent, thing is, I don't know if you realised that the battles are all prelocated. Might be the benefit of the developer here, but the floor tiles with webs on either have a chance for a battle or just apply a debuff. I did it this way so there was a hard limit before facing the first boss. I'll rethink that idea and make the enemies clearly located in future.

Thanks for your help, glad you liked the characters (I am predominantly a write afterall).
  9. No problem! I had no idea that's how the battle system was working :/
If that way works best, you should keep using it! I just wasn't paying enough attention to notice I guess..
Really enjoyed the game though, good luck!
