This question is being put forth here for two reasons. First off another forum member posted a similar thread and got a lot of feedback and it didn't seem to bother anyone that she did so, and secondly because I'm at a standstill at this point. It isn't that I cannot come up with names that I like that is the problem, but rather that if there is anything that my wife and I disagree on vehemently it is the names that we want to give our children. We couldn't agree on a name for our second child until it was time to sign the birth certificate, and even then the name we chose for her was at the bottom of both of our lists of acceptable names though it was the only name that we could both admit we liked enough to agree to. So this time we find ourselves at the same crossroads, but with two names to come up with this time, and pretty much the same choices of names we argued over before - the one we could actually agree on. So I ask you all, as the only internet community I've been on and one that both has diverse demographics of users to help maybe come up with some names that we might both like. As it stands now...
First two children
Rachel
Alexandra
Names I like:
Lucia
Liliana
Rin
Elle
Names my wife likes:
Beth
Sarah
Taylor
Merry
Mary
Anna
Names we both kind of like:
Clementine
So suggest away if you feel like it; we really need more name ideas.
If you had twin girls, what would their names be?

lol - I've gotta side with your wife on this one. I much prefer the names she's chosen. The only one of yours that I really like is Elle.
You seem to be going more towards names that would be used in RPGs, so maybe we're aiming to suggest names that would be good in RPGs but still sound nice "in the real world" :)
What does your wife think of Lucy? Sareen? Serina? -
I will come back to this when I'm on my computer but one thought: I wonder if she'd be more agreeable to Liliana with the nn Lily. Lily fits more the style of names she's chosen. Also, if you haven't seen it yet, there's a site called Baby Name Wizard that allows you to put in your kids' names and it suggests sibling names.

Kira and samatha :p

@Shaz: I... didn't realize that about the names I'd chosen. When I think back to it though, I'm pretty sure I heard both Rin and Liliana first from video games. Lucia is just a female divergent on Lucian, the name of my great grandfather whom I respected a great deal. Hmm, now I have to rethink my stance on this; I always thought of it as liking names that are unusual enough that there aren't 1000s of them everywhere while still not sounding completely made up. I.e. probably how a lot of people come up with names for rpg characters now that I'm thinking along that line. I kind of like Sareen, it's definitely better than Sarah but maybe in a way similar enough that she'd like it to.
@mlogan: Oh we've both played around with all of the various baby name generators out there. As for sibling names, the one thing we can agree on so far is that the names do not have to fit well with each other, even between the twins. If they happen to do so that is great, but if so it'll likely be by happenstance more than anything else.
@blademan729: aside from me not liking either name and my certainty that she wouldn't either, that's really clever if looking up name meanings on google is being accurate right now. Basically naming them tranquility and chaos, it would be unique at the least. -
I just like the sibling thing because it usually gives names in the style you like. Really though, there are two girls - why don't you each pick your favorite name? :D
edited "pickled" - thank you so much autocorrect -
How about Elicia and Gabriella? :)
-
Aya & Aki.
Kinda like salt & pepper. -
I'm not going to lie, I hate the names your wife has chosen. Mainly for the fact that they are wayyyy too common. (And another member? Do you happen to mean... ME? ;) )
If I had twin girls, and were able to name them whatever I wanted without any dislike or whatever, they would be Elorah and Clementine.
Elorah Violette and Clementine (no middle yet) -
With my first kid, the name I picked is pretty common. She was named after someone else who had really helped me get out of some dark places at the time. (and I like the name), so it was a bit different than most naming. (Her name is Kristina, though we all call her Kristy).
Second kid, I had a thing. I was going to name him something that was NORMAL, that wouldn't get looked at weird or made fun of, but I was going to pick something obscure enough that he wasn't going to have 3 friends with the same name. We ended up going with Alecsander (he goes by Alec, which constantly leads to "yes, like the Baldwin").
So really, I would want something in between you guys's choices. Something that is more obscure than hers, but less odd than yours. (Though Elle isn't bad :p ). -
Okay, now that I hve a full keyboard -
I'm kind of with Touchfuzzy. I like names that are more normal, but not common today. My eldest is named Evelyn, we call her Evie. She was named after a relative and at the time of her birth it was not a common name at all. In the 8 years since, it's has surprisingly risen on the popularity charts. But it's nice because I've not met another Evelyn her age, though I've met some younger. Plus she has the flexibility to go by Evie or Evelyn. My second daughter is Eliza, again a nice classic name, but not widely used.
Anyway, Evelyn was actually listed as a sister name to Lucia, so Evelyn is going on my list of suggestions. Others I found and I liked (since you asked what we would chose) are:
Ava
Cecilia
Maria
Madeline
Tessa
Harper
Eden
If I think of any other names I think you should consider, I'll definitely let you know. -
My top choices would be Evelyn and Audrey.
But if I had to go for something unique, I'd probably go with Aveline and Marina. -
My parents just went with giving us names that started with the same letter. We're Megan and Michelle. I find that to be a fairly common naming scheme for twins. Hey, it's better than rhyming names!
I really like the names you've picked out. They're not as common but not unusual at all. The names your wife picked out are, yes, way too common. Maybe more suitable for middle names. -
@mlogan: Each of us naming one of them is our last resort; in which case they will be Taylor and Lucia. I'd really rather find names we both like, my father hated my brother's name and though I didn't learn this till years later looking back I realized I'd never once heard my father refer to my brother using his actual name. I don't think either of us would be that silly, but still.
@Ruby @ Ms Littlefish: Thank you; at least I'm not the only one. Also @Ruby: Clementine is an interesting name. When I first read your post I absolutely hated it but each time I say Clementine in my head or out loud I like it a little more, weird. More importantly my wife had a similar reaction to it. Elorah is also an awesome name, but she doesn't like that either.
@Touchfuzzy: It's kind of hard to do that though as all of the names I chose are really just more dated than they are odd, with the exception of Rin they were all fairly common names at one point in time but haven't been for a very long time now which I think is why most of them appeal to me. -
Hi Alexander :) I'm afraid I have to agree with Shaz - those names do sound like something in an JRPG. I do like Elle, though. At the same time, I admit I find the names your wife chose a bit common.
I could suggest to you my parents' technique? They had two kids. Mom's name was Margaret, so her son was Martin. Dad's name was Clarence, so they named the daughter Christina. You could each name a girl.
Since you already have an Alexandra, how about: Alexa, Amber, Aura, Alicia/Alyssa, Amelia, April? Edit: Adds Lunarea's 'Aveline', which reminds me of the character from Dragon Age 2 :>
I don't know your wife's name to comment however :)
I do like Taylor, admittedly. -
Lucia
Mary
Megan
Vanessa
Miche'le (pronounced mee-shell-ei ) - I used to work with a woman with that name.
Soliel (so-lay) Same story.
Estela
Linda
Oh...! Have the twins arrived? Have they already been named? -
@iron crock: no and no, they aren't due until November.
-
How is the name hunt going?
Here are some "sister names", for the name 'Clementine': (Super cute nickname? Lemmie!)
Amelia
Beatrice
Charlotte
Elle/Ella
Gabriella
Ivy
Josephine
Lucy
Mabel
Matilda
Penelope
Ruby
Scarlett
Tabitha
Violet
------
I would go with Penelope, Violet, Lucy, Charlotte, or Gabriella -
So in case anyone cares, names have officially been decided.
Gabriella Annette Cain:
But I'm going to call her Elle until she's old enough to decide for herself what to go by and hope it sticks.
Lucia Cain:
Don't have a middle name yet, but ceded all responsibility for that to my wife since she agreed to let me name her after my great grandfather. Also she'll be calling Lucia by Lucy for the same reasons stated above(we're totally not playing nickname Russian roulette with our kids:) ) -
Lucy and Elle - Love them! The full names are beautiful too!
And I know what you mean by letting them choose. My Evie is really Evelyn, and I love that she has a choice. She will write Evelyn on her school work sometimes, lol.
