Id go pay a professional to install it. Otherwise you will be assuming all liability if you mess up or destroy your laptop. Also how can we show you how to install it over the internet via text? Not going to work I'm afraid.

or if you really wanna do it yourself, find a youtube tutorial so you can actually see what to do. Also afaik, different boards/slots can only use certain types of RAM so it could be that your old ram card isnt compatible with your current laptop's hardware setup, so better really get professional help
Lastly, being slow doesnt mean RAM insufficiency right away, so I also suggest getting your laptop evaluated so that you know exactly what is causing the slowdown, cause "upgrading" carelessly can actually cause more problems down the line -
First, you'll need to check the specifications of the RAM and if your new laptop can even use more RAM. Just because it physically fits does not mean that the RAM is compatible.

I need more info. What's the model of the laptop?
Currently installed ram? Is it DDR3? DDR4? It's possible there's some incompatibility between the old and new ram or one is actually damaged.
You might want to consider adding an SSD instead if you have a slot for it, especially if you already have 8 or more GB of ram, an SSD will greatly increase the speed and smoothness of your system.
The laptop might also be slow due to dust on the fans that don't spin properly and keep it cool enough, this happens especially if you never really cleaned it.
The laptop might also be slow due to the hard-drive slowly failing (especially if old).
Share the model of the laptop and we can tell you what kind of ram it supports and if it's upgreadable or not. -
This sounds like either a compatibility problem or a memory limit problem. In my experience, most of the time a damaged stick would cause the whole system to lock up on boot.
It could also be a failing HDD, like Dalph stated, but it would be more likely that you just need to run a clean-up utility and defrag. Maybe your paging file is too small as well?
