How to make a custom game in VX Ace?

  1. Hello!
(I do hope I am in the correct forum, if not, please let me know!)

I really am asking for something big, but after making a few short games on my own, using the basic assets and the basics menus. I came across The Grey Garden, a game by Deep-Sea Prisoner, understanding that the game itself was done in RPG Maker 2000, I wondered how it was done! Everything was custom, from the sprites to the tilesets.

If you're familiar with this game you may've seen that the characters were chubby and looked big on the screen, even though they were small in proportion! or how the backmost part was done! With a moving background and giving the look of more of a 2D game at some points... how do they do that? and I want to understand how they got it to fit. Or how the tilesets and characters had their sizes perfectly in the game.

I made some sprites myself, with the specific rules for a sprite, I used The Grey Garden's sprites as reference, as you can see, it's different from the normal sprites used in RPG Maker:

What they do is make the character look good in a set of custom assets, while mine just looks weird in the normal assets:

    It looks off right?

I'm not sure if I can show pictures of the game itself, but my idea is a fully custom game, with every possible asset made on my own, for it to have harmony inside the game.

I apologize if I wasn't as clear! But if I can clarify more, please let me know.

    Thanks beforehand!
  2. I assume you want to know how they changed the tilesize or something? The default tilesize is 32x32 pixel (in MV it's 48x48). I know that in MV, at least, it is possible via script to change the tilesize to something else, because I have seen MV games use VXAce's 32x32 so they could use VXAce tilesets in MV.

But I am not sure what else you are asking for... do you want help with making a custom artstyle for your game? Because that is a lot of work, and may in fact cost money due to the effort involved.
  3. It's not entirely clear to me exactly what your query is.

For help with creating tiles which harmonize with your sprites, you can post your attempts in the WIP thread in Resource Support. You can then get feedback to help you to improve them. This particular section of the forum is to help Members with non-resource questions e.g. how to get events to work in a particular way, how to get the timer to do something a bit unusual, problems with switches and variables, that sort of thing.

Could you please post and clarify what it is you are asking. If this is only about your graphic resources, then this is the wrong place for that. If you have another query, please could you give us more details.
