How to fix non-transparent graphic file backgrounds.

Hi, I'm new to the RPG maker world, and I have very little in the way of any graphic and design skills. I found some sprites for characters and monsters I wanted to use in my game online and they all show up white. Does anyone know of any free software or resources I can use to make the backgrounds fully transparent? I'm using the Lite version to see if I can get comfortable enough with the program to create anything decent. Any help would be appreciated!

GIMP

if they're with a white background then someone probably worked with them with MS Paint, because that program replaces png-transparency with white on save.

GIMP (free, and does more or less anything that PhotoShop does) is possibly the best to use. But if someone has used MS Paint, then you're going to get very messy edges when you remove the main white background, so you might have to do some tidying up.
