How Do You Use Switches?

I am new to RPG. I read about how I can make my own switch. But I`m kind of confused on how to use it.

In a game i`m recently making is there are 3 characters that appear on a bed in one scene. But after the scene is done they supposed to move to an other room. My friend told me I use switches to make them appear and when the event is over they appear after. When I try to use a switch on the first page of the event. (You know when you make an event there are control switch`s on the left side) and they don`t appear at all. What I did was I use a switch on a first page so they don`t appear at all yet.Then on the same page I put the event on what is supposed to happen in the event. At the end I put a switch. When I play test it they didn`t appear at all.

Is there anyway to make the events in order? Or am I missing a step? Please tell me more about how to use switches and how to use events in more then one room.

Also about switches is how make more then one character have a move rough? Not at the same time.
