I think using real life locations can work for any game, not just horror. However with horror I'd think it would be especially effective to use real life locations, as it can make the game more relate-able. Things you can relate to usually have a stronger impression on you.

An horror game in the cold Canadian tundra? amazing! that sensation of loneliness and helplessness. I supposse that you could put cabins and cottages in the forest that would work as "dungeons" and implement hunting and well, lumberjacking as an important part of the game, like for example, build traps, shelter etc.

yeah it was one of my point ''make impression'' and the fact I know well my country will help me a lot for creating the ''envirronement'' :)I think using real life locations can work for any game, not just horror. and thanks for you comment :)
haha yes you have also a Hydro Electric Central (place where you made electricity but using the strenght of the water) for location andAn horror game in the cold Canadian tundra? amazing! that sensation of loneliness and helplessness. I think having familiar locations in any game is effective. Part of the appeal of Fallout 3, for instance, was being able to explore a post-apocalyptic Washington DC with many of its landmarks being recognizable; it really emphasized the idea that the world as we know it was gone. If the game had been set in a fictional city, I feel the environment wouldn't have had nearly the same impact.
The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games also pulled this off really well: setting a game around the site of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster, and putting their own spin on it, like mutant animals and scientific anomalies. The fact that the locations visited in the game were modeled after real places in the exclusion zone made it all the more engrossing (and creepy). -

PArasite Eve took place in New York and managed to be a chilling thriller, so real life places can be useful in any scenario.

Using real places is great! It is done all the time.
The problem then, though, is actually making it look like the place you are basing it on. You're Canadian and I suppose you've been to the Canadian Forests before, but have you ever really looked carefully at what it is made of? You'd recognise a game based in the Canadian Forest if you saw it, but what about when you make the game yourself? What kinds of trees are there? How tall? What colour are the leaves? What kinds of bushes are there? What colour are the rocks? etc. etc.
The best thing to do is to go into the forest yourself (daytime is fine if night is scary. I know it is for me), look around, takes pictures, and really look at what the Canadian Forest looks like, then try to replicate that in your game. -

this is one of my big lack the fact no tileset of canadian forest exist...*sigh*
is why when I will get money I will ask people to do tiles for me I don't care of the prices until I can get tiles who fit with the canadian forest ; D! -
I once had an idea for a horror game that took place in an empty football stadium.
Inspired by working as a night security guard in an empty football stadium. -
I've been working a game off and on for a while that revolves around Houska Castle.

Finding out how to implement and make the player experience fear has been difficult. I've rewritten the story plot a few times trying to figure out how to make it all work. -
If you've ever heard of Poveglia Island (Poveglia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) it's a prison for plague victims during Roman times, then rebuild during the Black Death, and then in the 1900's turned into a mental asylum till the loonies killed the warden. 'Nuff said.

I remember a RPG game that took place in real life places. Shadow Hearts 2 started in France then later into Russia and half way in the game you end up in Japan which was a awesome concept, having magic and monsters while the areas and world you are in is exactly the same in real life, I mean come on I was pretty impressed that they showed a lot of memorial places in that game like the Eiffel Tower.
Real life places in games are always welcomed in horror and in other genres IMO.
