  1. I picked up VX ace the other day, and I've been working on figuring this thing out.

I found an interesting use for the parallax background under map properties.  Because my first project is semi-autobiographical, I'm basing the maps on places I've lived.  For example, I've blown up a map of Washington state to 9000x13793 to fill a 430x281 tile map.  This has allowed me to use that image as a template and get some reasonably accurate cartography done.  Then once I've finished the map, I can remove the image and free up resources.

As far as I can tell, the only way to accomplish what I'm looking for is going to be to have three levels of world:

    City / Dungeon level

    Overworld

    Over-Overworld

Or to put that another way: Nation, State, City.

I've had quite a bit of trouble trying to find a decent forest tile.  Trees in a proper old growth forest should measure between 250ft - 465, with a D4H measuring between 8 and 32 feet.  Given that people tend to fall a bit below that, a tree should never be smaller than a tile (though I will concede that 58 tiles would be a bit much, even if it is to scale).  But all of the large tile trees I've seen aren't forest tiles, but individual tree tiles.

Mountains are bit problematic so far, as well.  If they insist on sitting on top of whatever I dropped there before, then shouldn't I be able to slide a different base layer underneath without erasing the mountains?  I haven't been able to find a select tool of any kind either.

Of course, that's probably because I'm doing everything wrong.

At any rate, this looks like it will be a fun exercise.

If anyone can point me to a more robust tileset, that would be great.  I picked up the adventure bundle, but I'm not even sure if it's installed or how to use it.

Ahh, abject stupidity.  It's the hallmark of learning.
  2. Welcome to the group!

Sorry, I only skimmed your intro for right now. My head is splitting so it is hard to focus.
I do know this though, there is no way to edit a lower level tile without it erasing the upper level tile over that spot. You have to redo the upper level tile afterwards.
  3. Welcome to the forums.

I won't give any advise on mapping, but there is a thread on it here if you want feed back for it at some point :)

As for trees.. check this one out :)

That's a list put together by GrandmaDeb, she makes wonderful lists of resources by artists and sorts them by types... in this case trees :) You can look at her signature in her posts for links to some of her lists. At some point, if she hasn't already.. she's going to have to make a list of her lists.
  4. Thank you for the kind welcome.

It seems that there is a great deal I do not yet understand about this tool, but I have a very specific vision of what I am trying to accomplish.  I anticipate that you will all hear a great deal more from me as I progress.

On the upside, I'll be contributing some musical content.
  5. Welcome aboard Zxomma, I'm a dumb too when it comes to mapping, so I can't help you about that, but for tree resources, there's should be some custom out there.
