Games you acknowledge are good but still don't like.

  1. I think that when you partake of a type of media often enough, you begin to distinguish between things you don't like because they're bad products, and things you don't like due to your own individual preferences. We can dislike or even hate something while still accepting that it's, ultimately, a polished and well put together game. So does anyone have a game that performs well, but just doesn't appeal to you in spite of its qualities? And if so, why?

For me, the most outstanding example would be Okami. Beautiful and unique art, concepts and themes that aren't often touched upon in western culture, nuanced gameplay with a solid progression and difficulty curve that lasts throughout its considerable length, and arguably the best game that came out of Clover. And for the life of me, I just don't like it. I find it dull, plodding, and repetitive. Its twists spoil the story for me instead of enriching it. And the Clover sense of humor--which I like in most of their games--misses more than it hits for me.

    Anyone else?
  2. Any game in the Zelda franchise. Try as I might, I just can't get in to them.

Yes, this even refers to Ocarina of Time and Link to the Past.

    I probably shouldn't admit that on a forum specific to RPG's.  >_>
  3. Besus as long as you don't diss Persona series, Crono Trigger, Shin Megami Tensei, and Ys in anyway you'll be safe in this forum. Every other rpg burns in a blazing fire in this place.
  4. Minecraft

The game is great, but with it being open world, sandbox styled I just can't enjoy it. I feel as if Notch can use the Minecraft engine for something like a first person dungeon crawler. The "try hard to be funny" community doesn't help me enjoy the game either.

Why not? Its not like the Zelda games are RPGs. (Hint: They are action adventure games)

Hmmm. I would say probably... the Mother games. I just don't like them. I admit they are good, I just don't like them.

I'm in the same boat, actually. Never could get into Zelda.
  7. I would say Half-life. This game sure is great, but damn duh, it bores me to death. I like straightforward fps like Doom and Serious Sam so of course it can't work out with me.
I like to play fps to blow things up, not to drive a stupid buggy solve puzzles and meet the whole world licking my ass "oh Gordon Freeman , I can't believe it oh you're here let me in awe while you go take all the risks for us!" (ok, Doom have kinda puzzles too but well wads with too much puzzles tend to piss me off too if I want puzzles I play Zelda or Tetris.).

Another kind of game that is greatly made but I don't like is all that is "infiltration oriented" like Splinter Cell and Metal Gear. Scenarios tend to piss me off itself but damn, the gameplay... I hate to have to always strike in the back like a b*tch. In terms of secret agents,I prefer William  Blazkowicz :p
  8. This might seem a little odd coming from a huge Sonic fan myself, but the original Sonic the Hedgehog.

Out of all the classic games, it's the one I have played and enjoyed the least. It's a good game, definitely.

But after playing the games that came after it (specifically 2, 3 & Knuckles, and CD), I wouldn't say I'm a huge fan of this game,

especially after getting used to all the new features and abilities in the sequels.

Still a good game to play everyone once in a while.
  9. As long as we are being honest, I have a couple:

1.Skyrim, I don't understand it, It's quite ed if you ask me. In my opinion Fable III is a much better rpg.

2.(everyone can hate me for this) Final Fantasy series, I tried and tried to get into this but it just doesn't fit for me. So I prefer Kingdom Hearts from this.

3.And the dreadful old game for N64 Banjo and Kazooie, Not much I can say its just to childish and not enough action.
  10. Skyrim.

Like, I get the appeal, but the combat is just god-awful boring and the quests are too. It's a beautiful game though.

1: I can agree. I have my severe problems with Skyrim, and I'm glad I never bought that game.

2: The irony you have cloud as an avatar.

3: Childish? Oh ho I assume you never found any of the british wit, jokes, and inside jokes...and come on. Clanker's Cavern... that's a freaking trash heap and you can go inside a decaying rotten shark with blades slicing its flesh! You swim inside its bloody stomach, and its mouth is a toilet!
  12. I also can't get into the Final Fantasy series. I LOVE sitting down and watching someone play, but I can't for the life of me pick one up and play it.
  13. Golden Sun. Except I don't acknowledge it's good, I think it's terrible! But lots of people seem to like it and I can't stand it.

And Kingdom Hearts. Lots of my friends heart it, but it bores me playing it. I can acknowledge I probably just don't "get" it though.
  14. I think that people are entirely missing the point of this topic.

This is about games that you think are good, but aren't to your taste.

I don't think games you call "ed" fit in that.

Basically, stay on topic, this isn't a generic about popular games you hate because you are a cool kid topic

    Yeah, you, me and zozma.
  16. I never could get into Xenogears. I have it, and I started playing it a good 5 or 6 times (got pretty far into it the last time, too), but I just end up dropping it. I know it has a kickass story that is right up my alley and I'm not the least bit annoyed by any of the gameplay elements. I still can't seem to get through it.

The funny part is that I replay the Xenosaga trilogy at least once a year and everyone I've told this to tells me Xenogears is a must-play.
  17. Conversely, I love Xenogears and cannot for the life of me get into Xenosaga.
  18. As much as I love Xenosaga, it's definitely not something that everyone will enjoy. For one, it's cutscene-heavy. I think there's a 20-something minute scene at one point, too, which is a big downer for people who prefer more play. It also goes through a lot of changes through the 3 games (from battle system to character graphics, to character personalities, even), so if you really like an element in one of the games and it's not present in the other two, it's a bit disappointing. The story is a really complicated one. It took a couple play-throughs to get things straight and I'm still surprised at some of the details I catch in later play-throughs.

But it's also got cool spaceships. Lol. No, in all seriousness... It's hard to explain, but it has this amazing mix of science, psychology and spirituality/religion that just resonates with me personally.
  19. This is a hard subject. However I will try to answer.

Those shovelware Slender like games. It is fun to watch people to freak out and those games are good. But it is same idea over and over again so I don't tend to play them that much personally. Expect those exceptional ones.

Zelda series and most games Nintendo puts out. However I like their third party games where their role is just to be publisher mostly. I know those games are well made as they sell so damn well even if I don't like them that much.

Starcraft II's ladder mode. I enjoy the campaign and Arcade but can't enjoy the ladder mode that much, even though it is good as I sometimes watch it on Youtube etc.
  20. Suikoden II. I honestly believe it's the best in the series, but I just can't like it and have no idea why. At the same time, I liked IV and even Tactics.
