I personally don't mind either way, but many people seem to prefer diagonally.

@hyuugacln I have moved your post and the responses to here as part of the purpose of this thread is to discuss map design choices like that.
-
@hyuugacln Personally I find that I prefer the diagonally aligned trees, and I'll second @Milennin by saying that you should definitely break them up a bit. Maybe add a 1x2 tree every so often to kill the monotony?
Something to keep in mind is that its probably not a great idea to take too much inspiration from Pokemon for your maps. While those games have a very appealing style, they tended to have pretty weak mapping until the 7th generation with lots of blocky looking areas and noticeable tile repetition. -
@AmieLK You've got a lovely map there! You've got an issue with the new stuff not being cohesive with the other tiles, but I think one fix would be easy and make a huge difference. Well, it will if you have the file with all the layers intact, if you did destructive editing this will be harder. The original green stuff has a loooot of hue shifting and is very saturated. You can fix this in one of two ways. 1. Take that hue shifting and saturation down until it's in line with the rest of the assets. 2. Change everything else to have more hue shifting and saturation until it matches the new stuff. Personally, I think extreme hue shifting makes something look more fantastical or dream-like, and the one without would be more realistic and grounded. I made an edit to show what I mean.
-
@Sharm This is fantastic advice. And hah, of course I've saved every single layer. Shouldn't be too hard to rectify. I'm toying with @Kes 's ideas for the willows, too.
Would you do me a favour and post this reply in my project thread so that I can keep track of it? It's something I'm gonna wanna reference when I go back to prodding the Downtown Dalross map. -
Some screen from my village map

Lovely mapping! -
@AmieLK Sure, no problem.

My recently made game over screen. Any feedback on what to improve?
I tried my best to emulate a blood effect, not sure if it looks decent.
Game Ovah
I'm a newb at photoshop. Sheesh... The control layout is such a nightmare to work with, compare to Fireworks. -
Taking a short break from Legion Saga (okay, it has been longer than short, but still) to play around with some MV RTP + resources from these forums mapping stuff.

Hello!
Figured I'd introduce myself and post a map I'm currently working on.
Utilizing some of Avery's edits + my own RTP edits :)
Spoiler -
its probably been over a year or so since my last post on this thread. ive made quite a few changes to my world map that i wanna show.
heres the map of Riften with its boarders labeled:
(i wanted to upload a version without the drawings, but the site wouldnt let me for some dumb reason)
here are the countries in numerical order:
great wall o' text#1 Oal: Oal is a country that is full of dense forests and strange vegetation. it is the primary home of the Mamali, a race of humanoid animals. (all mammals) there are 3 major cities in Oal. theres Oal Nastuk, the capital of Oal. the Mamali who live here are the ones who are most distrusting of humans, and would rather they all vanished from Riften entirely. Oal Enbis, the smallest city. they are more accepting of the humans compared to the capital. and then theres Oal Reizell, the medium sized one. Oal Reizell is neutral on the whole humans vs monsters debacle thats been going on for centuries. there is also a tribe of Mamali living at the lake near the floating island called the Amazon that live in the densest part of the forests. theyre a tribe of all females and only evolve during a great hunt thats held every year by their deity Azomi on the floating island. their village is known as Oal Nambei. it used to be just Nambei, but Oal Nastuk made them change it if they wanted to continue trading. Oal is technically the first place you see in the game, because during the intro narration, the main character is seen walking through the woods of Oal, but ends up in country #2. speaking of which...
#2 Marigate: Marigate is home to Reznant, the biggest Origus (humans) city in Riften. the Origus there are accepting of most races, though the list is pretty small. this country is also the primary home to the Beastkin. the Beastkin are a race of humans that were magically infused with bestial aspects such as ears, tails, horns, fangs, wings, and so on. they are considered outcasts in the world, but by the end of the game, they're given a second chance by most civilizations. they live in a forest that is always covered in a thick layer of fog and the only way to find the city is by the starting town is a nice little village in the woods that is currently being ravaged by goblins and such. there is also a grand observatory (which i forgot to move closer to the city) where the study of cosmic magic is being held. Marigate is also home to the religious army known as the Golden Light, who are a group of zealots who worship the goddess of hope. the group is currently split in 2 due to conflicting interests in how to operate.
#3 Heldrich: Heldrich is the owner of the green side of the famous green-red mountain range. (its supposed to be half red on the back side) this country is the primary home for the Icarus, who are basically half angels. they have the appearance of them, but lack the immortality and grand power that angels normally have. the main city of the Icarus is known as Damincu, and lays atop a floating island protected by holy magic. there is another group known as the storm callers that live somewhere in the mountains. the capital of Heldrich is Augaunt city, which is famous for being the most diverse and accepting city in all of Riften. both man and monster can live in harmony there. another famous landmark is the Yiannos dojo, which is home to the last remaining member of the Yiannos family. (who becomes one of your party members) they were famous for being able to master any weapon given to them. the fortress on the mountains has been taken over by Orcs and is being used as a military base. (i use the word military very loosely) it was a base used by the Light Elves as a defensive base in the case of the Oni deciding to join the Dark Elves during the war. there is also a tiny bit of land inside of Oal that is owned by Heldrich as an Icarus sanctuary that protects an ancient relic is held there, and is incapable of being moved, so it has been claimed by Heldrich for the time being.
#4 Presko: Presko is another country that is primarily full of Origus, although this time, there is no race thats secretly living there. Presko is home to the R.D.F. (Riften defense force) which acts as the first responders to any major threats happening on the continent. they have the largest military in all of Riften. even larger than the 2 elven cities, and the fairies. to the right of the mountains surrounding the R.D.F. main base is a ruined temple beaming with radiant energy. the Golden Light is, of course, looking into this phenomenon, and you end up having to fight them. there is also a ruined city in the middle of a dead crater. a few decades ago, the humans attempted to open a portal to another realm. unfortunately, the realm they opened it up to was the realm of nightmares. nightmarish creatures started pouring out at an alarming rate. they were able to close it before too many nightmarish creatures escaped into their realm, but the monsters brought a blight with them. one that kills all living things that touch it. in order to prevent the whole world from being destroyed by this nightmare blight, the goddesses of hope and justice teamed up together to sink the city into a big crater and coat the perimeter of the crater in twilight essence. even though it was against the gods pact to interfere with the mortal realm anymore.
#5 Vensil: despite all the forests in Vensil, it is most known for its savannah that connects to the desert. this region is probably the least important of all regions. not too many important events happened in this area other than a few battles between the light and dark elves. it is the make-shift home of the twilight elves, however. theyre a mix between light and dark elves. they live hidden away in the mountain range that separates the 2 elf races. they create these strange machines that can extract cosmic energy from the sky. there is another Mamali tribe living in the savannah known as the Pygmy tribe. theyre a tribe of Mamali who never discovered how to evolve, so theyre stuck in their small, stumpy forms. and then theres the savannan research center where people are researching the effects of Fae magic on the local wildlife (will explain that with #6) over in the forest section of Vensil holds the base for your party in one of the games. its a big tower that overlooks the surrounding forests. the capital of Vensil, known as Gyagyo, is a semi European themed city next to the ocean and the great crag mountain. there is also the ruins of the school of enchantmentation. (which is totally a real word) also there is Piwofu island, which is inhabited by many different races, but is predominantly inhabited by the Origus aborigines.
#6 Halu Vaans: Halu Vaans is the primary home of the Light Elves. the Light Elves live in a European style kingdom surrounded by a Fae forest. the Fae forest consists strange flora and pastel colored trees. (i couldnt get pastel trees with default rpg maker, so use your imagination) the Fae forest comes with many up sides and down sides. on one half, there are many plants that make for good food and medicine, and it keeps away many different threats, such as Demons, evil spirits and rogue Celestials. but on the other side, a lot of the flora and fauna is dangerous. normal animals that eat the plants or drink from the waters in the Fae forest eventually end up becoming mutated and go insane. and the same can happen to people who are not properly protected from its strange magic. there are also strange monsters that dwell in the Fae forest that are much deadlier than most monsters found anywhere else in Riften. and then there are many evil plants that attack travelers and creatures alike. many of those evil plants seem to cultivate around a mysterious mansion that hasnt been inhabited for many years, yet still looks brand new the Fae forest is spreading, but its spreading at a manageable rate. there are many regulators keeping the Fae forest at bay so that it doesnt consume the whole land.
the Light Elves are not effected by most of the crazy stuff that goes on in the Fae forest, since they originate from the Fae. they were created when the gods tried to fuse angels and devils together, just to see what would happen. they then decided to turn some Origus into these angel/devil mixtures. the outcome was a little different from what they expected. the ones with more angelic blood turned into Light Elves. the ones that had more demonic blood in them became Dark Elves. and the ones who had the 2 perfectly balanced became Pixies, who later on evolved into Fairies. (will get to that soon) there are still many Fairies in Halu Vaans, but a lot of them moved away to seek out a new home after the Light Elves basically claimed the place as their home. one place that holds many Fairies is Dual Peak city. a city that is located in front of 2 small mountains that are directly next to each other. theres a big bridge keep that goes across the 2, but i couldnt put it in using default rpg maker, so again, use your imagination. the kingdom of Halu Vaans is ruled over by the Esliere family. the present king managed to overthrow the previous king during the Elven war seeing him to be unfit to rule due to his views on the Dark Elves. after that, the kingdom became allies with the Dark Elf kingdom once again. the main character of one of the games is the daughter of the king. she decided to take matters into her own hand since her father was unable to deal with the mysterious disappearances of many people across Halu Vaans.
to be continued in followup posts because ive spent like 5 days working on this without uploading it. -
@Arcmagik I really like your mapping in those screenshots, everything looks like it gives the player enough space to roam around and explore, while still having plenty of detail and variation, and I really like maps that do that.
@gigaswardblade I like how you were able to come up with all these different locations, and that all seems good. However, this may just be me and my opinion and tastes, but it seems a bit messy in the worldmap to me. There are a lot of different locations in odd places from each other, and that could get confusing, that's what I think I'm trying to say. -
Been forever since I've posted anything here. Not much but some custom scripts to give the characters sprite effects - that was pretty much inspired by moghunters scripts. I like when the characters are all woobly.
Also just messing around with laying out the menus to be no-intrusive to the battlers.

-
@sleepy_sealion
The animation looks great! The drawings are also really good and super cute. I love puppies and racoons haha :D
Are you leaving the menu that way? Or is it just a placeholder?
I made a youtube video showing how I made a map and someone told me it looked really sloppy and bad. I was wondering how I could improve it? I intended for the house to look ugly and quite sloppy however it is for an emotional scene, so I don't want to make people laugh at my bad mapping during an impactful scene haha.

a lot of them are just landmarks and arent the actual size that they are on the map. there is a lot of empty space that gets skipped over when traveling around the place, so thats why some things may be spaced out in weird ways. also, i didnt want to talk about every single thing thats on this map since i felt that not all of it was important. i will ,however, answer any questions about landmarks in zones that ive already talked about if you have any. -
@gigaswardblade I think almost everything you have going is good, it's just when it's mashed together on the world map it seems a bit cluttered and messy to me, that's the only thing I am trying to say. But I'd prefer it if you had another opinion since I'm not sure if that's just my own.
Here is an example of a world map I made just for fun a few weeks ago.

I don't think this is really a good world map, because some things are in very odd places, so I don't recommend you copy my style with where objects have been placed here, but yet it is still an example of how things are not as cluttered together as much, to help explain what I'm trying to say.
Note. I still think this map could have longer gaps and lengths between places, but it's more spead out, which is what I'm thinking is a good idea.
You can still keep all your locations together without having gaps of sea and still spread it out more. -
The dog game looks adorable!
Anyhow. I've been busy on odds and ends. Thinking of doing something for the release something event. Figure it would be a fun milestone. Here is a tileset test run. -
@Weremole There's something very Chrono Trigger about that map. I think with it being that rocky it needs a few rocks that aren't part of the mountain side, if you have them. It's also not clear what this area is for. Can you exit on the left or the top right or is this a dead end? If you're supposed to walk up the top right, it might be a little cramped to traverse.

Has to be the leaves. =)@Weremole There's something very Chrono Trigger about that map. I think with it being that rocky it needs a few rocks that aren't part of the mountain side, if you have them. I have loose rock tiles. The paths also goes nowhere, it's just a test run made so I can implement things like functioning slopes and elevation. Speaking of slopes do you think they would benefit from their own graphic or would context clues suffice? -
Hmm, I don't think it's that. I've been seeing that exact style of drawing foliage a little too often lately, and I'm not a fan. It's reminding me of one of the maps you fight lavos spawn, plus a little mystic mountain. Palette and layout maybe.
Yes to both questions. The context is sufficient, it looks like you'd be climbing up, but it could still benefit from it's own graphic. A different texture on the snow at least, the one you've got really only belongs someplace flat.
