So, I'm playing the Freedom Wars Beta right now, and I'm really liking it so for.
What I thought was basically just going to be a sci-fi rip-off of Monster Hunter is shaping up to be so much more, so I'm really hyped for this one.
Anyone else playing atm, nor planning to play upon full release?
If yes to the first, what's your first thoughts about the game?
If no, any questions?
EDIT:
Some first impressions:
- Good character customization. Not as good as Phantasy Star Online 2 maybe, but still tons better than a lot of other similar games.
- The "accessory", your personal computerized partner can also be fully customized which is awesome.
- People actually refer to you by the name you picked using vocaloid technology.
- Combat is pretty neat with a combination of melee and cover-based shooting with an element of Spiderman in the sense that you have a grappling-hook that you can use whenever you want to pretty much any surface, including on enemies(you even have some awesome sword attacks that work with the grappling hook).
- Story-focused. So unlike Monster Hunter and similar games where pretty much everything revolves around item gathering and gear upgrades with no real driving story to give you incentive for doing those things, Freedom Wars has a story that is pretty dominant throughout the gaming experience.
Cut-scenes, character interaction and colorful NPCs all over the place. So, if lack of story is usually what kept you away from the MH-like games, that won't be a problem here.
- Game is very accessible. Although I speak and read Japanese, most of this game is self-explanatory, and streamlined interfaces with plenty of icons, and simple controls etc, make this game pretty playable even for non-speakers, or those who only speak a little, even if some of the finer points of the story might get lost on you.
- It has been polished a lot since the trailers were first released, which means it has a lot more "depth" to it, in terms of the feel of the game-play than what seemed to be the case when it was first announced.
- Soundtrack is pretty cool.
Some negatives:
- You can't move while covering. You can pop-out shoot, but you have to tap the X button to get back down.
It's kind of frustrating if you're used to the average 3rd person cover-based shooter, but on the flip side, this game has RPG elements, and head-shots aren't lethal, so while covering is useful for laying ambushes etc, not being able to move while covering won't necessarily get you killed.
- The graphics look a bit dated, with some low-res textures that really stand out at times. Fortunately, you usually won't notice these in the heat of battle. Still, could have spent a bit more time on graphics and animation considering the power of the vita.
