My Review
I once spent dozens of hours on this game on my previous Steam account which I have lost access to. I just bought the game again, and trying to remember all about the game on my new Steam account. Without a further ado, let's roll out!
Forever Home is a beautifully crafted game that weaves a tale of love, loyalty, and sacrifice against the backdrop of a world teetering on the brink of collapse. The story focuses on Xero and Enda, two childhood friends whose lives are turned upside down by a series of catastrophic events. Their journey is as much about saving the world as it is about finding meaning in their shattered lives and rediscovering the bonds that define them. At the heart of the game are Xero and Enda, two characters whose relationship forms the emotional core of the narrative; Xero is a reluctant hero thrust into an impossible situation. Haunted by his past and burdened with the weight of impossible choices, his journey is one of self-discovery, redemption, and facing the shadows of his own soul; and Enda, on the other hand, is a force of nature - a fiery and determined individual whose unwavering loyalty to Xero drives her actions. Her resilience and courage shine throughout the story, making her an inspiring and emotionally rich character. Together, Xero and Enda's dynamic is deeply compelling. Their bond, tested by loss, war, and moral dilemmas, adds a human element to the larger-than-life events unfolding around them.
While the focus remains on Xero and Enda, the world of Forever Home is brought to life by a cast of intriguing companions and adversaries. Each member of the party brings their own unique skills and perspectives, adding depth to the gameplay and enriching the story without stealing the spotlight from the leads. The antagonists and other characters encountered throughout the game are equally complex, each playing a vital role in shaping the narrative. Their motivations and actions are woven seamlessly into the larger story, creating a world that feels alive and unpredictable.
The gameplay of Forever Home is a satisfying blend of traditional RPG mechanics and thoughtful innovations. The turn-based combat is both strategic and rewarding, encouraging players to experiment with skill combinations and resource management. Each encounter feels meaningful, whether it's a small skirmish or a climactic boss battle. Exploration is another highlight. The game is filled with secrets, optional content, and lore that rewards players who take the time to delve into its world. From challenging puzzles to hidden treasures, the game keeps the sense of discovery alive throughout.
At its core, the game is a story about the human condition. Themes of friendship, sacrifice, and the search for belonging are interwoven into every aspect of the game. The writing is heartfelt, and the dialogue between Xero and Enda often carries the emotional weight of the story, highlighting their shared history and unbreakable bond. Visually, the game makes excellent use of the RPG Maker VX Ace engine, with detailed environments that evoke the charm of classic JRPGs. The music enhances the experience, setting the tone for emotional and dramatic moments alike.
All that said, there's some room for improvements, if the game would be ever updated. While the writing in Forever Home is heartfelt and impactful, the visual presentation of key story moments could be more polished. The shift between gameplay and cutscenes sometimes feels abrupt, disrupting the emotional flow of pivotal moments. Smooth fades, dynamic camera movements, or more nuanced animations could make these scenes more immersive. Emotional scenes could benefit from more expressive character animations or sprite movements to better convey the intensity of the dialogue. Simple touches like head shakes, pauses, or environmental effects could go a long way in enhancing the emotional resonance. I think this can be done in VXAce. Some cutscenes feel slightly too long or overly detailed, which may lead to pacing issues. Streamlining certain sequences without losing their emotional weight could help maintain player engagement. The game takes its time setting up the story and introducing its characters, which, while important for world-building, might feel slow to some players.
The initial segments could benefit from a stronger hook or a more immediate sense of urgency to draw players into the story. For example, introducing a major conflict or a high-stakes situation early on could grab attention and encourage players to invest in the characters. Although this is not always the case with known JRPG's, it is certainly a deployable idea. I think including more interactive elements, like a short combat tutorial integrated into the story or an early puzzle, could break up long exposition scenes and keep players engaged.
Now let's talk about difficulty spikes. While the game’s combat system is rewarding for players who enjoy strategic challenges, certain battles might feel overly punishing, especially for newcomers to turn-based RPGs. Some fights seem to demand a very specific strategy or set of skills, which could alienate players who haven’t prepared their party or explored thoroughly. Offering clearer guidance through subtle hints or in-game tutorials about effective strategies would help ease players into the difficulty curve. Including adjustable difficulty levels or an optional "story mode" could make the game more accessible to a wider audience. For example, reducing enemy damage output or providing extra resources in a lower difficulty could allow more casual players to enjoy the narrative without frustration. Implementing features like mid-battle checkpoints during long boss fights or allowing limited skill adjustments during combat could prevent players from feeling stuck if they miscalculate their strategy.
In terms of exploration, while the exploration in the game is rewarding, it sometimes lacks sufficient guidance, leading to moments where players may feel lost or unsure of where to go next. Adding environmental hints, such as lighting, distinct pathways, or more NPCs giving more indirect directions, could help players without feeling hand-hold, not just relying on quest log. But for the sake of lore also, a more detailed quest log with optional hints or clearer objectives would help players track their progress and prevent frustration. The game’s aesthetic, while charming, could benefit from small improvements to enhance immersion further. Some areas, particularly dungeons, could use more visual variety or unique features to make them more distinct and memorable. I forgot to mention, the gameplay could use better synchronisation between game aesthetic and the map and level design, muck akin to Golden Sun. While the soundtrack is excellent, incorporating more sound effects during key moments - such as the clash of swords in combat or environmental ambiance - could add another layer of immersion.
The game is a touching, story-driven RPG that highlights the strength of its leads, Xero and Enda, while painting a vivid picture of a world on the edge of destruction. With its heartfelt narrative, strategic gameplay, and memorable moments, it’s a shining example of what RPG Maker VX Ace can achieve. For fans of classic JRPGs and those who enjoy character-driven stories, Forever Home is a must-play. It’s a game that reminds us of the power of friendship and the lengths we’ll go to protect those we care about most. And it's also a game that reminds me, that we are not always the enemies. 8.5/10
