Can we delete several (or all) BGM files that come with the RTP package (to reduce file size) without any ill effects on the software?

Wait, I'm confused. You're trying to reduce the size of your game, right? Deleting it from the actual RTP installation isn't what you want to do then. If you ever used those tracks or have a game on your computer that requires use of the RTP it's going to have issues. To reduce the size of your game you tell your game to stop using the RTP and move into the game folder the stuff from the RTP that you do use.

RTP files shouldn't modified or deleted. Some of games that need RTP to play may have issues if you do that.

You can read this:
http://forums.rpgmakerweb.com/index.php?/topic/3799-releasing-games-without-needing-rtp-lightweight-and-easy/
It will tell you how to remove RTP dependency from your game, and then all you need to do is copy any resources from the rtp into your project folder IF you are using them. Then the rest of the RTP resources can be left out, and your game will probably be smaller. If you want more tips on how to make your game smaller, shoot me a pm or something and I'll see if I can help any further. -
