Would it be possible to make my dungeon really dark and only be able to see around a small area of the player?

Yes! I'm using this in my game.

Google Khan's Awesome Light effects - it's an unbelievably awesome script :p

I cant get that script to work it just makes my character freeze... :/

Or you could make a black image with a transparent circle in the middle. If you show this image on screen, it will follow the player around, provided your map doesn't run into any edges, which dislocates the picture. There's a way to solve this of course, but that's too advanced for you.

Galv has a nice small script which does this. On my phone so can't give you a link, but a google search for Galv's scripts should bring up his website. He clearly separates out rgss scripts (Ace) from plugins (MV)
