Hey peoples!
So, just to see if I can, I've been working on remaking the classic text adventure game Zork! But I've run into a problem with dropping items. My idea is to use an in game menu the player accesses by pressing "a" while on the map, and then use the choice system and common events. That is not working to well for me. I am very new to RPG Maker, and would love any help I can get! Please help me!

What exactly do you mean by "dropping"? Just removing them from inventory or creating a map event that will allow you to pick them up again later?
And please post a screenshot of your current events, we can't detect your bugs without knowing what you've done so far - the magic crystal ball to look into your computer files does not yet exist in a non-magical world ;-) -

You can't make such an item drop with events alone, because events can't create other events. You'll need a script for that anyway, and the script linked above already does everything you want to do. -
