Can I tint the screen without tinting events?

  1. I have been trying to use "Tint Screen..." command to create an atmospheric dungeon when I get into a problem: As the screen turns dark, the player character as well as anything that should be visible for exploration are also darkened.

While I don't mind darkened area, I don't want the player fumble around in the dark looking for items and clues. As I recall, older RPGs usually have a screen tinting that change the color of the background but leave the player and event sprites in the default colors, like these examples:

The default solution would be to manually edit tiles into different colors, however, this solution cannot provide a smooth transition like you usually do normal tinting, especially if you have a day/night system or when you have so many levels of color and brightness you want to tint into. Is there anyway to replicate these effects?

    Thank you in advance.
  2. You'd need a custom plugin for that due to how it is handled. Which would also break any other plugin that deals with map sprites.
  3. Do you need this over and over or just for one short section? You can always recolor tiles and do a "change tileset" event when you want it to be night.
