What better way to spend an evening than gathered around listening to a classic tale of a brave hero saving a princess from a sinister demon lord bent on ruling the world? Sure, it may be the same story you've heard time and time again, but don't old stories get better with age?

So here we find our usual crew. A hero, a demon lord, and a princess all congregating to tell the story of the hero's triumph and the defeat of a great evil. Everyone here know their role and exactly how to carry it out. But what happens when the story doesn't go exactly as we know it? What if someone were to rewrite the story to something no one within it knows how to enact? Who's responsibility is it to put the story back on its track and find the happy ending we all know and love?

Brave Hero Yuusha is a satirical love-letter to an older, simpler time of role-playing games when one's mission was solely to rid the world of a great evil and save the land. But nobody would be content if we played such a thing straight. Instead, players can look forward to a trope-shattering romp built with visuals heavily inspired from older RPGs; namely Dragon Quest, Hydelide, and Destiny of an Emperor, with extra emphasis on the former. Arm yourselves to the teeth and face off against a rogue's gallery of monsters and strange creatures as your journey to piece this broken narrative back to the way it should be!

You can download the full game on the RMN Page.

Brave Hero Yuusha is based on games from a simpler era, and therefore aims to keep its gameplay and systems relatively simple yet enjoyable. Players can look forward to:

    • Classic turn-based combat
    • Custom visuals inspired by NES-era RPGs
    • Splendid chiptune tracks
    • A brief but enjoyable journey with 3-5 hours of gameplay.

The Hero- Like the hero of any good story, our protagonist has a "strong sense of justice" according to the back of the box, and is probably also completely unqualified for this role. The Hero is abruptly awoken on the morning of his seventeenth birthday to be appointed the title of "Yuusha", despite never having done anything, and is to take on a grand quest to save the world against his will and well-being. Having been sent off to the Demon Lord's castle hours before he was supposed to, all The Hero just wants to go home and do goodness knows what, but when someone disrupts the very fabric of the story, guess who's responsibility it is to put the plot back together? It's tough being the Yuusha.

The Demon Lord - The bumbly, often-befuddled Demon Lord's role is to kidnap princesses and threaten the world with a great evil and await defeat by the hands of the Yuusha. It may not be the most well-liked of positions, but it puts bread on the table so he might as well not deviate from the usual motions too much. Angered by the destruction of his mighty fortress when the story is steered off-course, the Demon Lord joins The Hero to seek revenge and the proper compensation for the damage. Despite what many people may assume, he may not be completely satisfied with his role as Demon Lord...

The Princess - The Princess's role is to be saved by The Hero, but when he gallantly shows up earlier than expected, The Princess grows furious and vows to knock some sense into both he and the Demon Lord to show them how they should act. She is short-tempered and openly enjoys berating the Demon Lord's bumblings, whom does not dare say a word otherwise. She is proficient in magic, but few would know of this given the circumstances she would normally come under.

  2. I was enjyoing it until I tried taking a screenshot with F12, haha... Silly me! :rswt:

But it looks great! It's fun to play, although the battles are a bit easy, it's not really a game about battles. It's been an entertaining and fun story so far, the graphics and music are very nice and most of all, it feels genuine retro.

So Jack, Rash and the sinister overlord Dicky will travel on! (Everyone! You pick the names YOURSELF! Don't think of blaming Mettool for my poor choice of names!)
  3. I have to ask whether you've been inspired by Maoyuu.

The whole 8-bit aesthetic looks very good.  I also like the "smiley"-looking enemies, they are funny.  Hopefully you've made the gameplay interesting enough to keep up with modern sensibilities.
  4. If you mean the anime Maoyu Mau Yusha, then no. I didn't even know it existed until people started pointing it out to me. :)
  5. Gotcha.  "Yuusha" was all the hero was ever called by in that anime, and Maoyu(u) was roughly the Demon Lord, who also happened to join the hero and willingly steered the story off-course.  So I noticed some similarities, and had to ask. :)
  6. A rather fantastic game, a darling story and a fair length as well. My only complaint is that it seemed a bit easy. Great work though, the aesthetic, the musics, the graphics, and the gameplay all felt classic, your role subversions as well were neat having the Demon Lord be a healer and the Princess be the dedicated Mage was a nice change of pace.
  7. Looks short and sweet, just how I like 'em

Yuusha actually means "Hero" in Japanese, so I'm sure they were just calling him Hero throughout the anime. Not to detract, but is the anime any good?
  8. This looks fantastically adorable. I love the old Dragon Warrior feel this has. It makes me wanna dust off the old NES. Make me a cartridge please? XD

I guess downloading it will suffice for now.

I'm aware.  Strangely, everyone was named according to their role (which is part of why I thought I saw a similarity here).  And yeah, the anime was pretty good.  Most similar one I could think of is Log Horizon (with a very different setting).  Let's take it to PM if you want to discuss more. :)

Ahhh I see. :) I used "Yuusha" as a title in the game, much like how in older Dragon Quest games, you were always just referred to as the legendary hero. And in Dragon Quest III, "Erdrick" ends up being a title similarly.

I also thought it was a good fit for the game's title. Brave Hero Yuusha is literally Brave Hero Brave Hero... or Yuusha Yuusha depending on who you ask, I suppose. :p
  11. this looks really cool! gonna try it tonight
  12. Congratulations on your game. Even though it's a short one, I'm enjoying it pretty much. I've been looking for a retro rpg game for a long time.

You should put it on Steam. I would totally support that an even buy it.

I'm curious about the graphics. How did you make them?

All of the game's visuals were hand-drawn in Aseprite!

That's really amazing. Again, congratulations for your patience and work.
  15. After playing @Mettool's Soma Spirits I thought of playing this! It seems to be A LOT harder than Soma Spirits though, after playing through a bit I couldn't get past the mad king...

But I'll beat him someday (Probably tomorrow) but I won't give up!!

    Older, but still fun!
  16. NICE DUDE!!!!

Reminds me of the old era of games when I was a kid :)

    AH the Nostalgia!
