Animated Open Wagon challenge

  1. Hello lovely people,

Here's a challenge for anyone who is interested. I would love to have an animated cart or wagon where actors sit in it and talk while the background moves. Does anyone have any idea how that can be accomplished?

The closest resource I can see is this person CeruSkye posting tiles and even a video of them at work.

But how to put actors in them? Would I have to, erm, open up GIMP and paste in actors into the cart with their expressions frame by frame while the cart moves? I'm probably making it more complicated than it should be o_O

Any input and insight would be appreciated :)
  2. Isn't this more of a programming question?
  3. Is it? I dunno, I thought it involved resources too >_<
  4. I'm just not sure what resources you're asking to be made, and it sounds like you aren't sure either. Maybe you should get some programming advice first, figure out how you're going to do it and then come back to this thread and update it with what exactly you need for resources.
  5. I had a covered wagon, but you could do an open wagon the same way ...

Make the wagon as part of the tileset, so you can say what tiles go in front of the characters (if there are any) - if there aren't, you could just make it an event. If the wagon is part of the tileset, make the wheels a character set and add them to events in the right location (requires the wagon to be drawn so the wheel spokes would be a multiple of 32 pixels apart). Put your PCs/NPCs in the wagon.

Turn on a switch which activates a new page on the wheels with stepping animation turned on, and instead of a map background, use a scrolling parallax.

Gives the image that the wagon is moving, but it's not, so you don't have to mess with 10 different events all moving at the same time.

Because mine was a covered wagon and you could only see the exterior through slits, I could get away with also adding a bit of a screen shake to indicate the rocking motion of the wagon. Not sure you could do that where the whole background is visible though.
  6. Oh my, Shaz, I thought my head was going to explode thinking of how I could technically accomplish this and find the right tiles, but you make it sound so SIMPLE. How can I send you cookies??

@Sharm - If you feel I posted in the wrong place, I apologize. I admit that my request for a wagon with wheels charset probably sounded vague to you. A mod is free to move this post wherever they think is appropriate.
  7. Yeah, I didn't quite get what you were asking for, which is why I asked questions and didn't just move it. So, animated wheels then? Do you need a wagon too or is there one that you already have that you'd like the wheels animated for?
  8. Yeah, where it belongs depends on whether you were asking someone to MAKE the sprites for you (Resource Requests), or just HOW to do it (VX Ace Support).

So it may need to be moved depending on your answer to Sharm's question. Remember, even though someone already has a nice-looking wagon, doesn't mean it's okay for you to just take it and use it, even if you're making a free game.
  9. Yes Sharm, thank you, I was essentially asking if anyone could produce the wagon and animated wheels. Shaz very kindly helped on the technical part of its execution.
