About a newbie program>?

  1. Was thinking there might be a need for an "adopt a newbie" program here since it is the official forum.
  2. This makes me chuckle a little bit, though honestly I'm not against the idea of taking a newbie under my wing since I've got a few years of rpg maker experience. I have no objections to this idea.
  3. We do have a VXAce school in mind but that is a cute thought :D

I remember RMCollective used to do this. OriginalWij taught some people.
  4. Okay seriously I need a mentor.
  5. This might work too. Newbies always want a mentor for easier transition. Maybe they could pay them something like game credits? Just throwing out ideas here.
  6. Something official might have an unwelcome side effect; it's possible that if such a program were endorsed officially and announced publically, it could create a line between "newbies" and experienced members that we don't don't to draw.

Experienced members are more than welcome to offer their support and advice to new members, and if new members are specifically looking for such a "mentor" than there is nothing stopping them (perhaps such threads would belong in the recruitment forum). But as an officially-endorsed program, I don't think that this is necessary nor a good idea.

I would encourage more experienced users to create more content aimed at helping new members: write tutorials!
  7. I don't think this needed. If a person can read tutorials and watch tutorial videos then he or she can understand the program. The RPG Maker is not difficult to learn. It takes time and practice. I don't think this program can be taught directly from a teacher or mentor.
  8. Not only that, but Kelsper has an excellent guide for both VX and Ace, and between that and the tutorials on the main site, no extra mentoring is really needed beyond practice.

HOLEH SHIET WHAT TIME CAN I ENROLL?!?!?!? plz .n.

    ok back to the topic:

Yeah that would be a great idea, so it would help newbies how to use RMVXA and prevent spamming the forum how to use RMVXA.(Just like RPGMaker did)
  10. Why can't a person who feels inclined to mentor newbs just make a thread? Just say "I can help newbs. I am available every Monday and Thursday from 1 2 3 (wordplay). Sign up now!" Just put it in the support forum for whichever maker they're most skilled.

Or, to make it 'slightly' official, make a thread for people to volunteer to mentor and pin it in each of the Support forums.

    Just some thoughts.

I was thinking about something similar, like an IRC channel where people can go and get answers to questions about various things since I tend to explain things better when I'm talking directly to people. I wouldn't know how to go about making a channel, but I would be willing to spend some time a day helping people with scripting questions or requests.
  12. Back on RMVX.net we had a support only channel, but it was so dead that when someone came in to ask a question, no one was paying enough attention to it to help.

In general, if you ask a question in the IRC, someone will attempt to help you, even if its just finding a tutorial that has the info you need. (Just don't expect the rest of the conversation in the channel to go on hold while someone is getting helped).
  13. This is not rmvx, so it's not fair to compare it, and there is no harm in trying to help people. I believe that with some good advertisement and proper and serious structure it could work. After all, people love watching RGSS videos, and I'm sure they would enjoy getting their questions answered instantly.

Considering that 90% of the people that help people in the IRC were in the rmvx.net irc channels, I would say it is very fair to compare them.

Segregating the support channel from the social channel just causes the support channel to be near dead and ignored, because 99% of the time, no one is asking any questions. And the more dead it is, the less likely anyone will actually be checking it. I've seen it happen, and other people from other RM communities have shared similar experiences with me.

There is some plans for a possible form of live support, but a separate irc channel is more than likely not the path we would take.

And as it is, you CAN get help in the IRC right now. Go in and ask Jet a scripting question. Or ask Frost a question about something. Or well, ANYONE in there for the most part can answer most questions. Usually, for something simple, I link a tutorial though, because there is an expectation, and honestly not an unfair one, that people try and learn from the wonderful tutorials that people took the time to write to get the basics down.

IRC help is best for medium to complex tasks.
  15. ... I, I'm not even going to bother with a proper answer. You're right, enjoy.
  16. I am going to ask that this be closed before a war or something starts. Sorry I brought it up. My apologies.

Some problems with the IRC just got addressed, mostly to do with some unacceptable behavior and a lack of active ops. Hopefully this will improve your opinion of it.

we try and help, hell I even try and help, but we barely talk about rm things there. It's just how it is, don't portray us in a negative because of that.

On topic i can teach someone who wants to troll properly?
  19. re: IRC

People come in and ask for help all the time; and I've never seen one not receive it. When someone is asking for help, somebody will always be able to provide an answer—or at least provide a link to a forum thread with the answer.

It's just that conversation isn't going to stop. People will always get help, but it will be mixed in with the rest of the conversation—and newer members might simply not be used to that kind of flow. Sometimes that might be intimidating, but such is the nature of chat rooms.

Often, if a newer member is having a hard time asking for help and keeping up, other members will open a PM with them and help them one-on-one. I've done this myself a bunch of times.

The forums are the ideal place for support questions, simply because of the natural speed of conversation. But if someone does come into the irc channel with a question (which does happen once in a while, but it's not nearly common enough to create a separate channel), they are never turned away.
