  1. THE BETA HAS BEEN RELEASED.
REQUIRES VX ACE RTP @ HERE

Heads up: Although development is serious, the game itself isn't. It's supposed to parody many things like night-life, sexuality, dumb internet memes, morbid and obscure desires, people's true(?) selves (no not like Persona 4, that would be lame), Dubstep (of course), my friends and I, etc. Expect sexually-suggestive themes, blood and gore, substance abuse to the max, Dubstep-related violence, and whatever else is wrong with this world subjectively. Also, Skrillex is the king in this game's crapshoot world, so if you don't like him (I don't either), then you should turn away from this tab now. No, you can't kill him, he's an ally. No, he won't betray you. OR WILL HE? I don't know. Actually, I do, but I'm not telling!

Remember, while the game's central theme is Dubstep, it's also making fun of other things. Also, remember that it is not meant to insult or undermine anyone depicted in the adventure. This includes Skrillex, Knife Party, Mitis, Excision, Datsik, Flux Pavilion, Devin Martin, the Chain Reaction characters, myself, UnKuT, ASSASSINO, Jarv and whoever else I forgot. Any coincidence with real events is merely just that, a coincidence.

What started as a joke between friends developed into an actual game, ladies and gentlemen.

Please make sure you are 18 years old or (im)mature enough or whatever to view this content. (it's mostly text, though)

Alright, I think you have an idea of how the game's gonna be like now. If you STILL wish to proceed, god bless you.

Don't worry, no fully-naked men or women are present anywhere in this magnificent work of art.

     THE STORY:

Once upon a time, there was a guy named UnKuT who lived in a peaceful town of Dubstep and booze. One morning, he woke up after having a prophetic dream of the end of Dubstep, booze, and the world - in that same moment, he heard the voice of Skrillex asking for his assistance.

Heading to his castle, UnKuT is informed that he must free the imprisoned souls of the Four Dubstep Gods in order to save Earth from a space-time paradox. After stocking up, the young man goes on a life-changing and questionably legal journey to save everything that is dear to him: Dubstep and booze.

Join our hero as he goes through the perceived psyche of his friends, swamps, mountains and alternate/paradoxical dimensions to free the souls of his favorite Dubstep artists, all while fighting a collection of odd and unlikely enemies to the sound of Dubstep and Dubstep guns.

The world of Dubstep RPG is incredibly small, but doesn't cease to be charming, convincing, unconvincing, disgusting, and trippy all at the same time. You will have your humble little town, the nearby poisonous swamp, the people's favorite forest overrun by hipsters in tents, the big castle where the Good King is at, weird places that don't make sense, and a few temples so you can actually save the world I'm describing (though I don't know why would you want to do that). The most unique parts of the setting are travelling through the MC's friends' psyche in surreal and potentially intrusive acid worlds. Think Yume Nikki, but not as good. I'm a bad mapper!

The game is supposed to emulate some sort of drug trip, having you go to places and do/see things that are normally absolutely impossible and stupid, even though it uses "normal" elements. Except talking skeletons and cursing cats, that's definitely not normal.

    THE MAIN CHARACTERS:

The focus of Dubstep RPG aren't really the characters, so, I'm sorry if I don't meet the minimal requirements for character descriptions here. Also, I really don't want to spoil some of the people you meet.

UnKuT - He is the protagonist, and the most legally naked man of them all. Always in his boxers, he sets off to save his world of Dubstep, booze, sex and drugs. Eager to help out the neighbour and kick ass, he is the perfect example of a flawed hero that everyone needs, but that no one deserves. His personality is mostly up to you, since the game will give you dialogue choices for the most part, so you can be either a bit of a dick or full paragon. His weaponry includes a selection of Dubstep Guns and "Naked enhancements" for armour.

Skrillex - The king of this world, he's a humble ruler who wishes to protect his people above all. One day, the Four Dubstep Gods disappeared, and after a thorough investigation he has determined that he couldn't fix the problem by himself - after all, he was growing old. Skrillex summoned UnKuT one faithful morning to, in fact, test him so he could become his successor, since the king had no kids.

Skeleton Bro/Andy - He will be UnKuT's best friend solely made of bones and a cape throughout this journey. Although he is incapable of traveling with him, he can go anywhere within the alternate and paradoxical dimensions. Andy has a wide knowledge of the world, dubstep, and always brings supplies to help the protagonist out in times of need. It is also implied that he has assisted other travellers in similar quests.

    THE MEDIA:

More stuff to come, I can promise you that! A trailer should be ready between the 20th~25th!

    AUGUST 8th UPDATE:

What's up? I've just finished mapping the game! Hooray!

Now, it's time to start doing the enemies, balancing items, and whatever else for the game to actually be something more than just a Myst clone without all the puzzles.

To celebrate, here are more screenshots:

Eventing and whatever will take a longer while, but a trailer should be ready within 2 weeks.

    (from "ryojiventures" by Hiimdaisy)

Oh nooo, I haven't updated this thread for 2 weeks now! And so much has happened...

Uhm, so last week I've been pretty sick, and managed to do no progress whatsoever on the game. But, the good news is that I'm pretty close to finishing it, I still need to convert the music, do the rest of the events, testing, proof-reading, filter out the BS, so...

I'll have an alpha ready by August 31st, that's for sure. But I'm not certain if the absolutely finished and perfect game will be ready by then.

    Meanwhile, here's another screenshot:

    THE CENTRAL FEATURES:

    • Every single track in this game is Dubstep. There is not one musical note that is not from a Dubstep song in this entire adventure. This includes Brostep, Chillstep, Glitchstep, ESPECIALLY Dubstep remixes, whatever.
    •

    • A trippy world to explore with optional stuff to do.
    •

    • A stoic plot that doesn't take itself seriously despite its silly attempts at being somewhat dramatic - one big ball of senseful stupidity that may be a direct hit or complete miss for you.
    •

    • Odd enemies ranging from the souls of Dubstep artists and random critters who are willing to shoot absurdly-lethal musical notes at you. PROMISE NO SLIMES OR RATES.
    •

    • Probably the first RPG to offer "naked armour" right off the bat - to PG-13 standards, of course. Oh, and Dubstep guns too.
    •

    WHAT NOT TO EXPECT:

    • A deep story or combat system. Seriously.
    •

    • Full-frontal nudity or explicit sex. There isn't any, at least in the public release.
    •

    • A family-friendly experience - this game is NSFW. Look at the disclaimer up there.
    •

    • A lengthy game - as I've said, the world is very small, you'll be done with this game in a few hours, perhaps a bit more if you're a completionist. It's one short but exciting trip.
    •

    • A loot-based game - to compliment the game's length, there isn't a lot of stuff you can collect.
    •

    • One ending - there are at least two so far, and one of them has a small variation.
    •

    Pre-answered questions just in case:

Q: Why the hell are you making this whole cancer?

A: For fun, and it's a little side-project I have to distract myself from Chain Reaction. Yes, I'm still making that. Should you care? I don't know.

Q: But why Dubstep RPG? How is this different from some other super-wacky non-sensical RPG?

A: Good question. This all started on interaction with Jarv, ASSASSINO and UnKuT together on Mumble (a voip program) a while ago - usually out of nowhere, UnKuT would start spamming dubstep for no reason at times like when he joined the server or during a random moment. At the same time, I was hard at work on Chain Reaction, and I came up with the idea of making a Dubstep RPG just for kicks. Yes, he is above the age of 18.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, that's how this tumor came to be. It's different because when I wrote and planned the game I didn't give two merditas about anything at all, aside from consistency of the story and making the characters believable.

Q: Wouldn't using copyrighted music in a game and distribute it like this be illegal?

A: It's as illegal as posting the music on Youtube, which means no one should care - this game is pretty much the same thing as one of those "SUPER MLG 420" videos. This site should not be affected, since I'm certainly not hosting the game nor any songs as attachments here. Besides, I'm not using the whole tracks anyway, only portions of them. Also, the game is completely free.

Q: Why in heck are you using the default tilesets?!

    A: I'm lazy.

No fancy screenshots this time, but I've got some bittersweet news.

The game is very close to completion now, literally only the music and some more alpha-testing are left.

Unfortunately it seems that the game is even shorter than I anticipated - if you rush it with the secret dungeon, you'll finish it in 1h30min or less very easily. That's what I get for making small levels, I guess. Oh well, next game I'll make bigger ones.

Just for comparison, the entire game's unedited soundtrack lasts longer than the actual game (totaling at 35 different songs, 2 hours of dubstep, with some clandestine house or techno here and there for good measure). This all sounds a bit weird to come out and say out of nowhere, but I thought I'd just be honest with ya'll.

Speaking of the music, I'm adapting almost every each song for two situations - for example, the Knife Party - Internet Friends track has 2 variations in the game: the post-drop as a battle theme, and the pre-drop as a field theme. This may sound outrageous, but in practice it works really, really well. The only exception I can think of is Flux Pavilion - The Night Goes On, which the pre-drop is horrible to loop.

But uhm, looping songs is quite the exhausting work, especially when I have 5 days to loop twenty more songs. Next time I'm looping songs on a daily basis, just to be quicker. x_x

What MIGHT happen is that I could release the Alpha on August 31st with less songs than the final game. All of the essentials will be there, but there might be more repeated songs instead of a large variety of them.

So, yeah, that's it. See you when the game's out!
  5. I read the description of the topic and I just couldn't help but shout "but...but...but that's GENIUS!" (in french) and start laughing frantically. And the fact it's a short game means I'll have the time to play it :)
  6. Back_to_the_future_Christopher%20Lloyd-thumb-400x337-33441.jpg

I have come with good news!

Yes, good news. Not good news, and certainly not good news.

Good news would be "hey guys, Dubstep RPG is now fully complete 100%, with the challenge and xp scaling and whatever bugs de_stroyed everything is perfect!! yayyyyyyy here's the link: lick" (obviously that wouldn't be the link)

You don't want to know what the good news would be.

But, here are the good news! Tomorrow, I'll bring you not the Alpha, but the BETA of the game!

How is this different? well, turns out the Alpha sucked a hairy one, because some early enemies would two-shot you at lv1~4, and you usually find them in pairs. Plus, the beta has a lot of fixes and a whole new tier of new enemies, to make up for the nerf of the other ones. Ain't that fun?

It still has a number of issues, though. Including:

+the XP scaling is all messed up, you level up too fast early on and your stats increase immensely

+you can walk through some tiles, but nothing game-breaking

+volume may be uneven for some songs

    +enhanced naked (mid-tier armor) breaks the early-game

    +NO CONTINUES (unlimited saves tho)

While I will still make a final, definitive version of the game, I think it'd be best to release this beta tomorrow than to post-pone this any later - after all, this game isn't that great, it's just a joke game where nothing makes sense - plus, I didn't want to have you all live a little longer... uhm, I mean, didn't want you to wait any longer for this amazing product just because I got ill in a critical part of its development.

It IS being tested as we speak, but unfortunately I can't fix everything today - in fact, the transition from Alpha to Beta was done 4 hours ago. Unless I wanted to kill myself by working on this all day, the final version of the game will have to wait.

The download link will appear in this very post (and the original post) on the promised day: August 31st, 2014 - at midnight GMT+0 - 3 hours and 45 minutes away from this post.

Crap, Valve time has struck again, this time 20 minutes late.

I still suck at making RPG games, so there were some bugs I had to take care of! Thankfully, good ol' Kaelan here got off his lazy ass to work on them, so here's a patch for you to apply on the Beta version of the game (just copy its contents to the Data folder of DubRPG):

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/dn9n4rbgfxybdt8/dubsteprpg_beta1.1patch.zip?dl=0

    Fixlog:

    • Fixed having Andy in your party at the end of the secret dungeon
    • Fixed Andy existing in the secret dungeon after you've beat its final boss
    • Fixed double-Andy in the final dungeon if you have him in your party
    • Fixed some supposedly unpassable tiles being passable
    • Fixed being able to get 2 items from Andy when you first meet him anywhere
  8. Looks good.

    Ill certainly play it.
